The gift of time comes every year on the twenty-first of June with the arrival of the summer solstice. On that day, the sun travels the longest path through the sky and provides us with more daylight than on any other day. Many cultures celebrate this day with feasts, picnics, dances, and music.
My Story on Time
There is much uncertainty in our world today, save for the existence of time, a "non-spatial continuum". When given more time one might question if time changes anything or if it changes everything.
At times like these, I often turn to music for inspiration, specifically the music of my youth. A beautiful melody accompanied by extraordinary lyrics have a way of uniting and comforting us during troubling times. There are many examples of this throughout history.
Pete Seeger, one of America's most famous folk singers, an influencer of many artists, and an activist for peace and social justice, wrote the song “Turn! Turn! Turn! in the late 50's. The words come almost verbatim from the book of Ecclesiastes as written in the King James Version of the Bible. The word Ecclesiastes in Greek means teacher.
Seeger added just a few lines, the title “Turn! Turn! Turn! and the last lines “a time for peace. I swear it’s not too late”, These words and the melody put to them resonate on so many levels to so many of us. That there is a time and place for all things under Heaven and above all else a time for peace. This message is no less important now than it was when first recorded. For those who are not familiar with the lyrics, here they are.
TURN! TURN! TURN!
“To everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together
To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing
To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven
A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late”
Lyrics: Pete Seeger
